“The Collector is an ongoing portrait of Christian, a lifetime collector who has “worked” the streets of his local town in Provence for the last 30 years. Every night, from midnight till dawn he makes a careful circuit of the town’s dustbins and picks up things he considers useful. These are added to his ever-burgeoning collection which now fills the three plots of land he inherited from his grandparents. The second part of the film revisits Christian after 3 years to find him adapting to new restrictions imposed by his nemesis, the town’s mayor. The film was made with the photographer Leonie Purchas.”

Wonderful short doc. from Martin Hampton. A perfect example of how documentary making is an art form…giving us an opportunity to view a subject from a perspective that we might not have achieved on our own. Comments?

But…the documentary?Thoughts etc.
I have an uncle. He’s schizophrenic (which doesn’t have anything to do with anything actually, other than he just doesn’t give a toss about what people think.) and he does the same thing but on a lesser scale. I currently have a few things in my home he came across and had no use for. It really is amazing how much waste we produce and for no good reason whatsoever. I think it may be about the fallacies of progression. The fact that progression does not mean progression at all unless there is no regression. (does that make sense?) We may be moving forward but it’s in people like The Collector, Not in the consumer.

I think a lot of us hoard/collect to varying degrees. From a dispassionate viewpoint I might have agreed with the council…crazy old dude cluttering up valuable land with rubbish. But seeing things from his point of view, well, his life is a metaphor, or an art piece. I suppose we can’t always discard peoples different perceptions of reality because they aren’t immediately reasonable to us? I don’t agree with that sentence! Damn,I haven’t been up long…maybe another stab at it later.
Still, I’d recommend checking out his other docs(I think there is a link there)…theres a good one on hoarding (possessed) and The Last Conductor is good too.
